ABOUT

As mentioned, DTO Surveillance and Investigators was founded by an experienced ex-police officer, with a gift in identifying behaviours exhibited by offenders.  He previously held store detective roles, and was found to be rated as having one of the top apprehension rates in New Zealand.

BERNARD MARTIN

Managing Director

As an ex-police officer, I have discovered that there is a great need to curb the growing trend of retail theft that has developed in New Zealand.  I have a natural instinct and gift which have earned me a reputation as having one of the top apprehension rates in New Zealand (Apprehension Statistics were taken by the 'Storewatch NZ' accredited by the NZSIA).

As an Ex-Police officer in the New Zealand Police I have the benefit of being fully trained and versed in New Zealand law.  In addition to that I also am fully registered and licenced by the Ministry of Justice.

In the early nineties, I was part of a team of surveillance officers that were assigned to go into a West Auckland Supermarket in danger of closure due to the volume of theft taking place. The owner was perplexed to find that one of the shoplifters I apprehended was a long time customer and friend. She had been a customer for 16 years and knew all the staff members by name and on occasions visited the store owner’s house for dinner. Unfortunately the owner acted too late to stem the tide of closure and ceased trading.

From this cumulative experience I have established techniques that have consistently served me well in the successful apprehension and prosecutions of offenders.

WHY DTO?

Increasingly New Zealander’s are becoming aware of an over stretched Police Force which at best times struggle to attend all incidents. The recent reports of falsifying crime statistics highlight this deficit.

Theft is by customers, staff and other employees such as sale representatives. Whilst store theft is low on the Police agenda, it is high in the retail sector and offenders are aware of this lack of police presence and thus are willing to offend more often.

This not only influences the company’s profits; it places jobs at risk and in the long term increases the cost towards consumers.

Untrained and inexperienced retail staff are a liability when it comes to the apprehension of shoplifters or dealing with situations that arise where there are suspicious circumstances.

  •  We can offer a training package to suit your workplace, whether 10 employees, or 100, we can get everyone working from the same page to be confident with company policy and how best to act without fear of standing up alone.

It is also a growing trend that shoplifters are getting more abusive and violent towards anyone that approaches them when caught in the act.

  • DTO targets this rising trend by lawfully apprehending and prosecuting offenders on behalf of our clients, preventing loss to our clients, therefore reducing the rising costs to everyday New Zealanders, and promoting a feeling of safety to staff.

When asked of repeat offenders why they target certain stores repeatedly, they have confessed that stores become known as ‘easy targets’ so are inundated and stores with a high chance of being caught are avoided.

  • The presence of DTO Officers will deter offenders looking for an 'easy target'.
